Other name: Pre-menstrual tension (PMT)

Premenstrual syndrome is a combination of physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms caused by several factors including changes in hormone levels and brain chemicals. In most women, it occurs 1 to 2 weeks before the period and usually ends when the period begins.

 

Symptoms
  • Prominent symptoms: irritability, tension, dysphoria (emotional discomfort)
  • Physical symptoms: bloating, abdominal cramps, constipation, breast tenderness (mastalgia), cyclic acne, muscle pain, headache
  • Psychological / emotional symptoms: stress, anxiety, insomnia, mood swings, increased emotional sensitivity, changes in libido
Risk Factors
  • High caffeine consumption
  • Stress
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Diet
Commonly Prescribed Drugs
  • Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine and sertraline (to treat the more serious symptoms)
  • NSAIDS to relieve muscle and joint pain
Treatment and Management
  • Supportive therapy (patient counseling)
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Reduction of caffeine, sugar, and sodium intake and increase of fiber, and adequate rest and sleep
  • Food supplementation, dietary intervention, and exercise
  • Hormonal (gonadotropin, progesterone) intervention
