Overview

Scabies is a contagious skin infection that occurs among humans and other animals. It is caused by a tiny, 0.3 mm long insect called a mite (Sarcoptes scabiei). It is acquired through contact with the female mite. It burrows under the skin, laying eggs along the line of its burrow. The eggs hatch and the resulting offspring rise to the surface of the skin, mate, and repeat the cycle either within the skin of the original host or within the skin of its next victim.

Symptoms
  • Itching (especially at night)
  • Rashes that appear as little red bumps becoming crusty or scaly
  • Skin abrasions and red rashes on areas that have been scratched
  • Thin, pencil-mark lines on the skin
Risk Factors
  • Close, prolonged human contact, such as touching a person who has scabies.
  • Clothes, towels, or bed sheets can spread the scabies mite if the items were recently in contact with a person who has it.
  • Scabies can spread quickly in crowded situations where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact (such as hospitals, nursing homes, and child care centers).
