Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is severe and disabling fatigue that lasts more than six months with no known cause and sometimes begins with flu-like symptoms. Fatigue is not due to exercise or relieved by rest and interferes with work-related, educational, social and personal activities and may eventually lead to depression. Diagnosis of CFS is difficult since fatigue may be a symptom of a range of other conditions.

  • Lack of energy

  • Muscle aches
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache of a new type, pattern, or severity
  • Joint pain without swelling or redness
  • Forgetfulness, confusion, or inability to concentrate
  • Sore throat
  • Low-grade fever

  • Abdominal pain
  • Persistent feeling of illness at least 24 hours after exercise
Risk Factors

There is no known cause for CFS but it is more common in women than men, adults in their 40's and 50's, people unable to cope with stress and people suffering from a combination of medical conditions such as viral infections, hormonal imbalance, and immunological dysfunction.

In most cases, the symptoms lessen over time. Though a lot of alternative treatments and drugs have been tried, there is insufficient evidence to prove that these treatments work. Since symptoms are different for different patients, health professionals will need to determine which one will work best for the patient.

  • Eat a nutritious diet
  • Get enough rest
  • Participate in an exercise program (Graded Exercise Program)
  • Spend energy wisely be efficient
  • Schedule rest periods
  • Set priorities and realize your limits. Do activities that need attention first so as not to expend energy unnecessarily.
