Bust the Holiday Rush

‘Tis the season again to be jolly, but as much as we want to celebrate the holidays smoothly, we can’t help but stress ourselves over all the shopping and prepping. It’s because we want everything to be in place before Christmastime, or at least before the holiday rush sets in.

But we can always manage the dizzying demands of holidays by planning ahead and setting a schedule for each activity. This way, we would not get overwhelmed by the things that we feel we need to accomplish. Here are some practical tips to ward off the hassles and worries:

  • Make a list of people and items to give
    • Write the names of people you want to buy gift and then decide what kind of item suits them best. This will help you avoid accidentally omitting someone from your list at the last minute. If you’re going to buy perishable items, make sure that you purchase them last.
  • Set a budget
    • If you’re on a tight budget, night markets, bazaars, and tiangges are the go-to places for cheaper deals. Remember that gift-giving need not cost your paycheck, it’s the thought that counts. Also, you might want to consider leaving your little ones at home and bringing just enough cash if you want to shop in those places, pickpockets are also everywhere at this time of the year.  
  • Shop as early as possible
    • Yes, shopping is really a pain especially during peak seasons or mall sales. But you can save yourself from going to over-crowded malls. Plan a day for shopping or mark your calendar for a pre-sale/sale. Make use of the list you made and prepare to beat the crowd and the long lines. Avoid last-minute shopping!
  • Use your free day to gift wrap and check gifts
    • Go through your list again, you may have gifts more than or less than what you need.
  • Groceries for noche buena
    • Food shopping and preparing for noche buena can be tough. Make your grocery list in advance and expect for the long lines and shoppers. It wouldn’t hurt to ask someone in the family to help you out so that you don’t have to do everything all by yourself. You can also buy cooked food, already packed and ready to serve.
  • Going to gatherings/parties
    • It’s inevitable to be invited to numerous parties during the holidays. But be prepared to battle with the traffic jam. If you’re planning to drive or commute to your destination, leave early, bring a lot of patience with you and brace yourself for the traffic.
  • Prepare yourself physically and mentally
    • With all the workloads, deadlines, company meetings, shopping, prepping and parties, these will leave you feeling worn out. Eventually, you’ll get sick if you don’t take good care of yourself. It also helps to take meds or supplements that would boost your immune system and keep you in good shape.  Stay positive and enjoy the festivities!

Indeed, the holidays can be stressful, but if we plan ahead and make the necessary preparations, we’ll surely have a happy, healthy, and even stress-free celebration. So enjoy the festivities with family and friends, and make the most of the holidays.
