Gumamela Tea

"Benefits and Recipe"

According to Tufts University scientist Dr. Diane McKay, drinking gumamela or hibiscus tea (scientific name: Hibiscus spp.) thrice a day can help lower blood pressure.

The research results conducted among 65 pre-hypertensive to mildly hypertensive individuals was published in the Internal Medicine News and was presented by Dr. McKay at the American Heart Association 2008 Scientific Sessions. The conclusion: including gumamela tea in a hypertensive person’s diet could help regulate and stabilize blood pressure.

Apart from blood pressure, gumamela tea might also help lower cholesterol levels, reducing one’s risk of developing heart disease, according to the Journal of the Science of Food Agriculture in Taiwan.

So how can you make gumamela tea? Here is a simple recipe.

You need:

  • 1 saucepan
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 8 pieces fresh gumamela flowers (or 2 tablespoons dried petals)
  • Lemon or calamansi
  • 4 cups of water
  • sugar or honey to sweeten the tea

Procedure:

  1. First, make sure that the pan you’re using is not made of aluminum because this metal reacts with the herbal tea you’re preparing.
  2. Allow the water to boil before you turn off the flame.
  3. Drop gumamela flower petals and cinnamon sticks into boiled water and allow it to steep for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Drain decoction into a pitcher, add lemon or calamansi, and also sugar or honey to sweeten. Consume as hot or iced tea within 3 days.

Gumamela tea is also known in the herbal community as an anti-infective (fights infection), emollient (smoothens skin), anti-inflammatory (reduces swelling), expectorant (expels phlegm), diuretic (increases urine flow), and antipyretic (fights fever).
