Amebiasis is an infection of the intestines caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. It is acquired through the ingestion of food and water contaminated by infected feces. This condition occurs worldwide, but it is most common in tropical areas with crowded living conditions and poor sanitation.
The infection is transmitted by the fecal-oral route, but it can also be transmitted indirectly through contact with dirty hands or objects as well as by anal-oral contact.
