Overview
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectum or anus. Internal hemorrhoids develop inside the passageway of the anus. They may protrude outside the anus, where they appear as small, grape-like masses. On the other hand, external hemorrhoids develop around the rim of the anus. When filled with a blood clot, they appear as lumps around the rim of the anus.
Symptoms
  • Anal itching, ache or pain, especially while sitting
  • Anal infection
  • Bright red blood or mucus in stool and anus
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Straining during bowel movements or poor posture
  • Constipation or diarrhea
Risk Factors
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Low fiber diet
  • Obesity
  • Constipation
  • Occupations that require prolonged sitting
  • Colon Cancer
  • Infection
Commonly Prescribed Drugs
Treatment and Management
  • Include more fiber in the diet
  • Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water each day
  • Avoid laxatives - these can irritate hemorrhoids
  • Regular, moderate exercise promotes smooth bowel movements
  • Avoid prolonged sitting on toilet
  • Avoid prolonged sitting, especially at work, get up and move around
  • Use soap and water for clean-up after stool
  • Use sitz baths with soapy water or Epson salt (magnesium sulfate) to manage pain
