Overview

Common Name/Other Name: Muscle ache, Body sore, Muscle sore, Myalgia [Eng.]

Body ache is a condition where a person feels discomfort, sores and pain in either a single part or multiple parts of the body. Most body pains are associated with muscle and joint pains and they are rarely severe.

Symptoms
  • Muscle ache, cramps, soreness
  • Joint pain
  • Neck pain or stiff neck
  • Back pain
  • Fatigue, weakness
  • Low endurance
  • Lack of sleep due to pain
Risk Factors
  • Stress and tension
  • Strenuous activities (e.g. high intensity exercises)
  • Infections such as flu/ influenza
  • Muscle and skin inflammation (Dermatomyositis)
  • Multiple muscle inflammation (Polymyositis)
  • Long-term widespread pain (Fibromyalgia)
  • Long-term fatigue syndrome
  • Lupus (a disease when immune system attacks the body tissues and organs)
  • Adverse drug effects of some certain drugs (e.g. Statins, ACE inhibitors, codeine)
Commonly Prescribed Drugs

?Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) provide pain-killing, fever-inducing and anti-inflammatory effects. COX-2 inhibitors are also NSAIDs that directly targets cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) that is responsible for inflammation and pain. These drugs should not be taken with other NSAIDs at the same time. 

  • Side effects: Stomach indigestion, stomach ulcer includes bleeding, anemia, heart failure, high blood pressure. 
  • Drug interactions: Diuretics, lithium, ACE inhibitors, anticoagulants, anti-diabetic drugs, cardiac glycosides, corticosteroids, other NSAIDs.
Treatment and Management
Home Remedies
  • Cold compression by applying ice wrapped in washcloth or placed in an ice bag to the affected area to relieve pain and inflammation.
  • Apply massage oils or liniments such as menthol, virgin coconut oil, and aroma scented liniments. Body massages can help ease pain, relax and soothes aches.
  • Warm baths can help regulate blood circulation and ease muscle tension.

Lifestyle modifications

  • Avoid strenuous activities until pain goes away.
  • Do stress-relief activities such as yoga and meditation to help calm and relieve physical and mental stress and tension.
  • Do warm-ups or stretching before and after physical activities/workouts.
  • Eat a balance diet and drink lots of water to keep hydrated while doing physical activities.
