Hair loss (Alopecia) is the loss of hair on the head or in any other part of the body.

  • Hair begins to fall out often in clumps the size and shape of a quarter
Risk Factors
  • Androgenic alopecia

  • Drugs (including chemotherapeutic agents)

  • High fever or severe infections (including fungal infections)

  • Systemic illness (particularly those that cause high fever, SLE, endocrine disorders, nutritional deficiencies)

  • Other heredity, aging and local skin conditions

  • Childbirth

  • Severe emotional stress
Commonly Prescribed Drugs
  • Minoxidil may prevent further hair loss and increase hair growth when applied directly to the scalp twice a day
  • Finasteride works by blocking the effects of male hormones on the hair follicles and is taken by mouth daily. Contraindication: Finasteride is not used for women with hair loss.
  • Corticosteroids (Triamcinolone acetonide, triamcinolone hexacetonide, hydrocortisone acetate) suppress the T-cell-mediated immune attack on the hair follicle

  • Practice good hair care
  • Treat your hair gently by letting it air dry when possible
  • Avoid tight hairstyles
  • Use wigs to mask bald spots
  • Healthy diet
  • Reduce stress
  • Use makeup to hide or minimize hair loss
  • Hair transplantation
Home Remedies
  • Regular massaging with basic oils (lukewarm oil i.e. Coconut oil, mustard oil or almond oil)
  • Regular intake of wheatgrass or aloe vera juice
  • Use natural concoctions i.e. Coconut milk
  • Wash hair w/ paste made from neem leaves or other homemade paste by adding honey and olive oil to some cinnamon powder mixture
  • Eat a healthy diet (more seeds and nuts, green leafy vegetables), foods rich in calcium, protein and iron
