Decreasing the Work in Workouts: Tips to Make Exercise More Fun

By: Patrick JuinioDecreasing the Work in Workouts: Tips to Make Exercise More Fun

Regular exercise can provide you with different benefits. When you exercise, your body releases ‘happy hormones’ known as endorphins, which help reduce pain and boost your mood. You can also build sturdier bones, which maintain bone density and make you less susceptible to osteoporosis as you grow older.  Other than that, you have a better chance of falling asleep faster and sleeping longer from spending a considerable amount of energy. More importantly, the constant movement enables you to burn calories and effectively control your weight. With a healthy weight, you can strengthen your heart and lower your risk of life-threatening medical conditions like coronary artery disease and hypertension.

Despite the advantages of exercising, some people find it difficult and boring, seeing it as a chore. Therefore, they either cut down on their exercise or do not exercise at all.

But at the end of the day, exercise is vital to health and should not be avoided. If you happen to be one of those who refrain from exercising because you think it is too regimented, it’s time you realized that such a perception does not necessarily hold true. In fact, you can turn exercise into an enjoyable activity.

Here are some tips that you can follow to make exercise more fun:

  1. Get yourself a workout partner.

Having someone, particularly an individual whom you enjoy spending time with, join you when you exercise can make your workout sessions more stimulating. This gives you something to look forward to, motivating you to stick to an exercise schedule.

  1.  Sign up for a fitness class.

If exercising with a single person is not enough to raise your enthusiasm, you may want to give fitness classes such as yoga, dancing, spinning, or Zumba a try. By participating in a fitness class, not only will you learn the proper techniques of performing a certain exercise, but you will also meet new friends along the way.

  1. Put some variety into your workouts.

Doing the same workout over and over again can make exercising a monotonous activity. To keep yourself excited to sweat it out, you can mix up your workouts. Instead of using only the treadmill at the gym, you can try other exercise machines like the elliptical trainer, stationary bike, stair climber, and rower. Alternatively, if the weather permits, you can try outdoor exercises like running, biking, and even walking rather than confining yourself solely to gym workouts.

  1. Listen to music.

Listening to music, especially upbeat songs, while working out can do more than just relieve you of the boredom that you might feel. It can also inspire you to get moving and make you less aware of your physical exertion, allowing you to exercise harder and longer.

  1. Watch your favorite television shows.

Although watching TV is often done by people living sedentary lifestyles, you can also incorporate it into your workout. Like listening to music, this takes the boredom off your workout and lets you enjoy it more. So the next time you have to catch an episode of your favorite TV series, you can do so while torching calories at the gym instead of lying on your bed or sitting on the couch with a bag of chips.

  1. Unleash your inner child.

Working out is not limited to lifting weights, running on a treadmill, or jogging around an oval. You can get in shape by revisiting your childhood and engaging in the games you used to play as a child such as tag, jump rope, or treasure hunting. The joy that you feel in playing these games can help you forget that you are actually exercising.

  1. Choose the right workout gear.

The gear that you wear can influence how you feel during and after your workout. It is for this reason that you need to choose the right workout gear. In picking what to wear for a workout, make sure to select gear that keep you cool and comfortable and do not interfere with your activity. For example, if you plan on doing an intense workout, go for clothes made of synthetic fiber which causes sweat to evaporate quickly and helps your body cool down faster. Meanwhile, if you intend to bike or run, wear shorts instead of pants to avoid tripping or getting your pants stuck in your bike’s pedals.

  1. Pace yourself.

Just as doing too little can impede your progress, so can overexerting yourself. This does not only expose you to injuries but also makes you prone to exercise burnout. Once that hits you, you will feel less motivated to workout. To avoid feeling burned out, work hard but take it easy every once in a while when exercising. Remember that reaching your fitness goals no matter how long it may take is a victory nonetheless.

Exercise can be a fun and fulfilling activity and not just a mere task. All it takes is for you to decrease the work in workouts.
