And no matter how hard you try, you just can’t stop yourself from reaching out for that delectable piece of cheesecake? In this case, self-control and a proper diet are two things that will play a huge role if you are trying to either maintain or lose weight. If you have tried and tested all sorts of diets, then perhaps you may want to try the Pegan diet.

An In-Depth Look at the Pegan Diet

Pegan is a combination of Paleo and vegan diets. The Paleo diet stems from the word ‘Paleolithic’, which means Stone Age or the era where the primary means of people to survive was to hunt and gather food. According to Mayo Clinic, if you follow the Paleo diet, your daily food intake would include more lean meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables. Seeds and nuts are included too.

Foods that are limited in this kind of diet include products of farming methods. This means less dairy, grains, and even legumes. To sum it up, your Paleo diet would be eating foods that were available during the pre-farming era.

The vegan diet is comprised of fruits and vegetables. It’s a plant-based diet that shuns the presence of meat. Even your protein needs are derived from plants – tofu has been the widely-used substitute of meat and many vegans attest to its efficacy.

Combining Paleo and Vegan

How does it work? Those who indulge in this diet go for more natural foods akin to what was eaten during the Stone Age era and at the same time, go for plant-based foods.

Looking at both diets closely, you might see that they have one thing in common. Can you guess what it is? Both diets exclude processed foods. Ouch! Your world may shatter if you are one who relies mostly on fast food to fill your hunger, or you reach easily for ice cream or cake when you are stressed. The sweet, salty, and fatty stuff may have been your best friend for decades, but advocates of the Pegan diet are simply shaking their heads against these foods!

The Reality of Processed Foods

The lure of processed foods is the culprit behind weight problems hounding present society. This is the reality that all modern people have to face on a daily basis. According to Medical News Today, processed foods are simply ‘bad’. They are the ones that primarily contribute to illness and to the growing number of obesity all over the world. As Kris Gunnars, the author of the article, puts it: “Every time a population adopts a Western diet high in processed foods, they get sick.”

As pointed out by the National Health Service, here is a rundown of processed foods that must be eaten in a very limited manner:

  • Breakfast cereals
  • Cheese
  • Biscuits
  • Cakes
  • Bread
  • Ready or microwaveable meals
  • Sodas and juices
  • Snacks such as pies, pastries, and crisps
  • Meat products such as bacon, ham, and sausage

This list may be a bit disheartening for you, but remember if you want to stay healthy and lose the pounds, then better take note of these foods and avoid them as much as you can. It may be next to impossible to not entirely eat these foods, but you have the power to limit them.

Should You Go Pegan?

Opting to go Pegan means that you eat more unprocessed foods, including fruits and vegetables. It’s a very simple rule that you can live by. If you can’t entirely avoid these unhealthy foods, then simply lessen your intake of them.

So, the next time that friends and family ask why you just halved your slice of moist chocolate cake, you can readily answer, “I’m going Pegan!”
