6 Mouth and Throat Care Tips for the Summer

By: Michelle Sunico Segarra, DDM, MOH, PhD6 Mouth and Throat Care Tips for the Summer

Summer is just around the corner and with the change in temperature, the mouth and throat are prone to certain infections. Also, as many schools still have their long vacations during summer, we tend to forget our normal routines and we become lax with our oral hygiene rituals.

Here are some more tips on how to keep ours and our children’s mouth healthy during this season:

  • Don’t chew on ice. Doing so can damage the enamel, which is the outermost covering of the teeth, causing tooth cracks or chipping.
  • Avoid sugary drinks. These drinks can make you thirstier because sugar, same as salt, pulls water out of our body cells to our bloodstream, which signals the need to drink more water to the brain. Just stick to water when you feel thirsty – it is by far healthier and more thirst-quenching than any colored drink.
  • Kids engage in more sports. Hence, they are more prone to dental injuries. Parents should take the necessary precautions to avoid possible risks of avulsed teeth, tooth fractures, lacerations, and abrasions. Mouth guards should be worn by kids who engage in contact sports or as needed.
  • Don’t neglect your oral hygiene. Plaque builds up on our teeth several minutes after we eat and bacteria inside the mouth can feed on them, producing acids to destroy our teeth. Daily brushing at least twice a day (in the morning and before going to bed) with a fluoridated toothpaste, rinsing with water after eating, and flossing our teeth should be a routine that is not broken during the summer months.
  • The perfect time to visit the dentist. As our kids on vacation usually have a lot of time on their hands, now is the time to bring them to the dentist for their dental check-up.
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables are in abundance. Eating more of these healthy natural foods can help keep our mouth and teeth healthy and prevent diseases such as summer colds and other viral diseases that can cause sore throat.
