As an adult (especially a parent), living and working in a busy society will definitely wear you out much of the time. From juggling workloads and attending business matters, to doing house chores and taking care of the family needs, it will surely be a long and hard day for you.

You’ll be asking yourself this question, “How will I survive?” Stress and fatigue are the main factors why you exhaust yourself until you have no energy left. But you can get your energy back by doing these two things: eat fruits and vegetables, and take vitamins.

One of the most important vitamins that all of us should have is vitamin C. Here’s the lowdown on vitamin C and what it can do to our body.

  • Antioxidant – The human body does not automatically produce vitamin C (ascorbic acid or sodium ascorbate). We get them from what we eat, and its main food sources are fruits and vegetables. Ascorbic acid is an antioxidant which helps eliminate the free radicals and microorganisms that cause illnesses in our body. This powerful antioxidant prevents heart, lungs, and eye problems, circulates blood vessels, heals skin wounds, reduces the risk of cancer, and improves our mood and physique.
  • Body resistance and immunity – Because of the antioxidant action of vitamin C, it eliminates disease-causing microorganisms like bacteria and viruses inside our system. While doing so, it also boosts resistance and immunity in our body system that fights off illnesses such as fever, cough, and colds, as well as physical complications like fatigue and body/muscle pain.
  • Prevents scurvy and produces collagen – Vitamin C prevents scurvy, a condition characterized by the weakening of connective tissues due to vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C helps in the formation of collagen, a protein that forms connective tissues which give support to blood vessels, bones, organs, and skin. By producing collagen, it prevents the skin and soft tissues from breaking, giving a healthy and vibrant skin from inside-out.

How important is vitamin C in our daily life? Let’s take our smartphone for example, its battery drains whenever we use it (calls, texts, surf, media, games, you name it!), especially when we pick it up almost every minute and every hour. When its battery is low, we immediately charge it. It is the same for us; our energy depletes whenever we overwork ourselves. That’s when vitamin C comes in; it gives us an energy boost and helps combat fatigue and stress. Same goes for children as they need the energy to go to school, to be active, and to protect them from diseases that the outside environment can bring. Let’s start a habit of taking a daily dose of vitamin C and keep ourselves healthy.
