Creams and Dynamic Wrinkles

"More reasons to smile"
By: Karen Lee Alabado, MDCreams and Dynamic Wrinkles

Moisturizing creams are meant to combat wrinkles but they do not work as well on dynamic wrinkles because it is our muscle use—when we create our facial expressions—that make these wrinkles come out. Smiling uses fewer muscles than frowning, so having a happy countenance truly helps one look younger. Frowning will cause those unwanted forehead lines which make one look older, so be vigilant about preventing them. One can wear sunglasses to avoid squinting in the sun and wear eyeglasses for reading.

Botulinum toxin can help make them disappear by paralyzing the muscles that make the wrinkles come out. It is this inability to move the muscles that make the wrinkles disappear. There are no creams yet which have this similar effect since the toxin works only when it is in the muscle and thus, under the skin.

In general, here are several things to do to keep your skin healthy:

  • Adequate hydration
  • No excessive exposure to central heating and air conditioning
  • No excessive drinking of dehydrating beverages such as alcohol and coffee
  • No sitting in front of the TV or PC monitor for a long time
  • Good sleeping habits
  • No exposure to skin irritants and air pollutants (like cigarette smoke)
  • Healthy diet and active lifestyle
  • Not too much or prolonged mechanical pressure on the skin (If you like sleeping on your side, alternate left and right.)

You can also see a healthcare professional who can advise you on wrinkles.

It’s never too late to prevent wrinkles from prematurely appearing or new ones from coming out. Ultimately, wrinkling is a normal part of aging and we can age gracefully. But for now, delay the onset of premature wrinkles—such habit reflects an overall healthy lifestyle. So, slather on your sunblock, apply a night cream, and smile!
