Migrating to Brown Rice

It may need some time getting used to, but if you learn to replace white rice with brown rice, you will make your doctor (and your own body) very happy.

  • Know how it tastes. White rice has a clean taste and fluffy texture when cooked, which is perfect when paired with tasty viands. Brown rice, on the other hand, is more chewy and nutty in flavor. You may find the taste weird when paired with your typical stews and meats, but give yourself a few weeks and you’ll get the hang of it.
  • Learn how to cook brown rice properly. Note that brown rice requires more water and longer cooking time than white rice because of the bran and germ. A cup of white rice requires about 1¾ cups of water with 12 to 15 minutes cooking time. One cup of brown rice, on the other hand, needs 2¼ cups of water with a cooking time of 40 to 45 minutes.

As a yummy dessert, you can make brown rice pudding by replacing water with milk and adding nutmeg, raisins, cinnamon, and honey. Brown rice can also be used in place of white rice in burritos, sushi rolls, paella, and other rice-centric dishes.

No matter how you prepare it, you can be sure that brown rice is indeed a better alternative to white rice because of the long list of health benefits you can enjoy with every cup!
