About Perpetual Help Medical Center - Las Piñas

The Perpetual Help Medical Center - Las Piñas (PHMC-LP) is one of the best-equipped, Level 3 medical centers in Southern Metro Manila with a bed capacity of 215.  For almost 40 years now, PHMC-LP has provided exemplary medical care to the south’s increasing population and rapidly growing communities.

PHMC-LP utilizes the dynamic combination of credentialed and highly trained physicians who are experts in their specialties, competent nurses and other allied medical personnel, and the most advanced tools of medicine available to achieve quality diagnoses, treatments, and patient care.  As the country’s first Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Affiliated Reserve Medical Center, PHMC-LP is also ready and able to respond to national emergencies.

Equipped with state-of-the art diagnostic machines, treatment modalities, and a comprehensive range of preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services, PHMC-LP has made high quality, holistic healthcare accessible to all Filipinos.  It has continuously upgraded its facilities and services, because of its commitment to bring state-of the-art technology and world-class medical care closer to residents of Las Piñas, Parañaque, Cavite, Laguna and beyond, regardless of race, religion and station in life.

Humble Beginnings

In, 1976, Perpetual Help Medical Center (PHMC) was formally opened and accepted its first patients.  A modest 2-storey 50-bed capacity community hospital with a daily occupancy rate of 10 to 12 patients, PHMC had four department: Obstetrics-Gynecology, Pediatrics, Medicine, and Major and Minor Surgeries.

PHMC, the forerunner of the University of Perpetual Help Dalta Medical Center (UPHDMC), was founded by Dr. Antonio Laperal Tamayo, his wife Dr. Daisy Moran-Tamayo, and their close friend and associate Mr. Ernesto Palanca Crisostomo.  It was the realization of their longtime dream to simultaneously establish a university and hospital in order to provide quality healthcare to residents of (at that time) rural south Metro Manila.

In 1985, the Philippine Obstetrical Society and Philippine Pediatric Society accredited the PHMC residency training programs in obstetrics and pediatrics.

In 1987, the Philippine College of Physicians accredited the PHMC residency training program in internal medicine.  That same year, JONELTA Foundation was established with the mission to care for the health and well-being of the community, especially underprivileged residents of Las Piñas.  The foundation’s beneficiaries can avail of free consultations, regular immunizations and pre-natal check-ups, and discounted medicines at the hospital pharmacy.

In 1988, The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine was established to meet the increasing need for Physical and Occupational Therapy services.  The following year, the Pulmonary Unit was established.  The Diagnostic Center and CT Scan Section formally opened in 1990.  In 1992, five more beds were added to the JONELTA ward.

In 1993, the hospital added 30 more beds, boosting total bed capacity to 75.  A 3rd floor extension was built to house the Intensive Care Unit and several private rooms.  The 4-bed Hemodialysis Unit and the Occupational Therapy Section was opened.

The JONELTA Clinic expanded into a 20-bed ward and the ICU added 4 more beds for a total bed capacity of 10 by 1994.

In 1995, the hospital pioneered the Voluntary Blood Donation Program and established the Diabetes Educational Clinic, which aims to empower patients with diabetes to lead full, functional lives. Learning programs include an intensive diabetes course, dietary counseling, self-monitoring of blood glucose, insulin injection techniques, exercise, and a special “Diabetes in Pregnancy” course.

UPHDMC celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 1996. The hospital lobby, emergency room and surgical facilities underwent renovation. The Medical Arts Building (MAB) was established to complement the hospital’s services and extend facilities. The 7-storey building can accommodate up to 500 medical consultants and 67 clinics.

In 1999, the Neurodevelopmental Center was formally opened. Initially named “Special Childcare Unit”, the center caters to children with developmental and behavioral concerns. It offers psychological assessment, developmental assessment, occupational/speech therapy evaluations and sessions as well as arranged home/school visits.

In 2000, the hospital was given the military designation “1st Air Reserve Hospital” and placed under the Air Reserve Command of the Philippine Air Force. Under the leadership of Group Commander Col. Antonio L. Tamayo (GSC), the hospital responds to national emergencies by providing professional care, medical personnel, rescue and relief teams, free medicines and medical-dental equipment. It was in the same year that the Microbiology Section acquired state-of-the-art automated equipment.

The Hemodialysis Unit was relocated to the upper basement of the Health Tower in 2002. In 2003, the Diabetes Educational Clinic was awarded “Outstanding Diabetes Clinic” by the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation (PCDEF). The following year saw the launch of our Home Care Program and the awarding of Alaine Macadagdag of the Diabetes Educational Clinic as “Outstanding Diabetes Educator of the Year” by the PCDEF.

In 2005, the Eye Center was opened to provide diagnostic services for various sight-related conditions. The Central OPD Registry was launched and the hospital acquired a High-Speed CT Scan while the Neurocardiovascular Section acquired three new machines.

In 2006, UPHDMC acquired a 4D Ultrasound machine, a Video Colonoscope, 16 cardiac monitors and a mammography machine.  It was in the same year that the hospital was licensed by the Department of Health as a Level IV Teaching Hospital.  The DOH define a Level 4 Hospital as a teaching and training hospital with at least one accredited residency training program for physicians that provides clinical care and management for prevalent diseases in the locality, as well as specialized and sub-specialized treatments, surgical procedures and intensive care.

The following year saw the relocation and expansion of the JONELTA Ward at the 2nd Floor of the HIS Building.  2007 was also the year the Department of Radiation Oncology first offered its Residency Program and our state-of-the-art Computed Tomography Planning System was made available to patients.

In June 2008, the Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) performed its first successful heart bypass and to date has performed hundreds of open heart surgeries. The HVI is divided into 5 clinical units: Cardiovascular Catheterization Laboratory, Cardiovascular Operating Room, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center, and Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness Center.

Also in 2008, the Department of Radiation Oncology completed its comprehensive range of Radiation Therapy services by offering Low-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy, the gold standard treatment for gynecological cancers.

In 2009, with the expansion of the Clinical Division as a separate entity from the Medical Center, the JONELTA (Las Piñas) Indigent Foundation, Inc. was renamed DALTA JONELTA Foundation, Inc. In the same year the Philippine Heart Association through its Specialty Board in Adult Cardiology accredited the 3-year UPHDMC Adult Cardiology Fellowship Training Program, the first program of its kind in the Southern Luzon Area.

Two specialty centers were established in 2009. The Neurosciences Complex consists of Neurophysiology Unit and the Neurodevelopmental Center while the Women’s Healthcare and Diagnostic Center has two specialized clinics designed to address specific health concerns in women. The Center provides a broad range of services, including Colonoscopy, Cryotherapy, Pap Smear, and Biopsies in suspected cases of cervical cancer and those involving reproductive health issues. The Center’s Breast Clinic provides state-of-the-art breast screening procedures, such as Digital Mammogram, Breast Ultrasound, and Breast Elastography with Automated Breast Volume Scanner (UPHDMC is the first hospital in South Asia to perform this procedure).

2009 was also the year when the Dedicated to Life program was launched. The program redefined UPHDMC as an institution not merely composed of doctors and nurses that cure patients but one that is committed to uplifting patients’ quality of life. We dedicate ourselves to helping patients get well, feel better, and to live a healthier life through quality medical service, competent physicians and staff, state-of-the-art equipment and excellent customer service.

In 2010, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) accredited UPHDMC as a Center of Excellence – Level IV Category Hospital. It is the highest level of hospital accreditation granted by Philhealth to healthcare institutions with well-established and efficient information management systems and processes. In the same year, the Cancer Management Center expanded its range of services through a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, with Rheumatologists overseeing the Center’s Intravenous Biological Infusion. The center is now called Cancer and Infusion Center.

2011 was another banner year for UPHDMC. The DOH accredited UPHDMC as a Kidney Transplant Facility effective January 6, 2011 to December 31, 2013.  Formally opened on September 9, 2011, the UPHDMC Kidney Transplant Unit (KTU) aims to help extend the lives of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) through kidney transplantation.  Five days after its formal opening, the KTU successfully performed its first “kidney harvest,” the surgical removal of a kidney from a donor for transplant to a recipient.  The KTU opening coincided with the inauguration of the Outpatient Pharmacy (MedExpress) located at the lobby of the Medical Arts Building.

The Cancer Infusion Center was formally opened in July 2011 to provide a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to cancer management in a more comfortable and patient-friendly environment.  The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Section was re-opened with the acquisition of a high-end 1.5 Tesla MRI Scanner.  The Eye Center was formally opened in the ground floor of the MAB.

The Neurodevelopmental Center introduced its Learning Enhancement Program to complement the Center’s Education (SPED) Programs for differently-abled children.  SPED teachers oversee the program, which aims to expand the Center’s range of services from Early Intervention to Life Skills Training.  Through the innovative program, differently-abled children receive training in vocational pursuits they enjoy.

In line with its commitment to excellent patient care, UPHDMC enhanced and expanded its range of high-quality health services by opening the Animal Bite Unit in 2012, the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center and the UPHDMC-Livlite Bariatric and Metabolic Center in 2013, and the Active Hearing Center and the Varicose Vein Center in 2014. UPHDMC also upgraded its radiological services by acquiring the 128 Slice CT Scan. In that same year, UPHDMC opened new rooms in the HOPE Wing.  2014 also saw the expansion of the hospital’s residency program with the opening of the UPHDMC Training Center.

In 2015, UPHDMC opened the doors of Dr. Robert P. Dulay Radiation Oncology Center to cancer patients needing fast, accurate, and affordable radiation therapy. Equipped with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Linear Accelerator, the Center can treat a number of cancer types, including breast cancer and head and neck cancer, with shorter treatment time, higher survival rate for cancer patients, and lower risk of long term side effects. Simultaneously, the hospital also launched its Epilepsy Center, which was designed to provide comprehensive assessment, treatment, and care programs for patients with epilepsy.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines has also reaffirmed its trust and confidence in UPHDMC by designating the institution as the first AFP-affiliated Reserve Medical Center.

In the same year, the UPHDMC won the Philippine Hospital Association's “Hospital Best Practices in Infection Prevention and Control” Awards Year 2 for Level 3 Hospitals category, along with three Special Awards including Best in Environmental Cleaning and Decontamination, Best in Healthcare Waste Management, and Best in Isolation Precaution Management, and one Special Citation for Infection Prevention and Control Implementation.

In 2016, as it celebrates its 40th founding anniversary, UPHDMC adopted the branding “Perpetual Help Medical Center - Las Piñas” (PHMC-LP).

In the same year, the Heart and Vascular Institute performed the hospital's first Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) procedure.

PHMC-LP also achieved ISO 9001:2008 certification in October 2016.

In 2017, PHMC-LP opened the 5th  and 6th Floors of the Main Hospital Building, in partnership with its doctors, allowing the hospital to accommodate more patients and deliver “Alagang Perpetual” to those who need medical care.

On top of that, the hospital inaugurated several Centers as it expands its list of services, including Nutrition Intervention Management Services (NIMS), Center for Dental Medicine, Hair Transplant Unit, and Cosmetic Surgery Center. With this, PHMC-LP is more equipped to care for the lifestyle and wellness needs of well members of the community.

To ensure seamless processing and facilitating of patient services, internal and external transactions, and hospital operations, and faster and more flexible recording and safekeeping of medical records and other documents, PHMC-LP implemented a new Laboratory Information System and Quality Management Services Portal and made a calculated shift from MedSys to BizBox Hospital Information System.

The hospital is also looking forward to the launching of the only PET-CT Scan and Cyclotron Facility in the South of Metro Manila. PHMC-LP is one of the three hospitals in the Philippines to have PET-CT Scan and Cyclotron Facility.

PHMC-LP is also working toward ISO 9001:2015 certification.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

At the Perpetual Help Medical Center - Las Piñas, our multidisciplinary team of specialists performs a modern surgical procedure that provides several advantages over conventional, open-type surgery.

Also called "laparoscopic,” “endoscopic,” "keyhole," or "Band Aid" surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) involves the insertion of an endoscope -- a long, flexible tube with a light source and camera -- either through a tiny (less than an inch) incision on the skin or a body cavity. The image of the body organ is captured by the camera and sent to a monitor / screen that surgeons can view during and after the procedure. Surgeons may also make other small incisions to insert special tools necessary for the procedure. The number and size of the incisions depend on the type of operation.

The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery's team of accomplished and highly trained specialists from different medical and surgical disciplines, supported by seasoned anesthesiologists and specially-trained nurses, performs a broad range of MIS procedures, as MIS is done to diagnose and / or treat a variety of diseases affecting different body organs.
